The PhD in Economics programme is intended for administrators, managers, economics or business eachers, executives, teaching-learning entrepreneurs, lecturers in higher learning institutions, researchers, consultants, trainers, and anyone interested to learn and create better business models in urban and rural communities.

Entry Requirements

  • A master’s degree in education or related fields accepted by the University Senate; or
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognized by the Government of Malaysia.
  • Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must  undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the University.
  • For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or its equivalent (eg. TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test-196; TOEFL internet Test 69-70 or MUET Band 3) is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:
    • A bachelor’s degree in the field or related field with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent from an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;
    • Undergo internal assessment; and
    • Any other requirements of the HEP.

The PhD in Economics is a research programme by thesis (dissertation). The PhD student/ candidate is placed under the supervision of an experienced member of academic staff or a supervisory panel. The planned activities or structure of the programme include:
• Student Progress Report which is done every semester until the student graduates
• Research Methodology Seminar and Presentation
• Three core courses:
a. Economics Decision in Business
b. Managerial Business Analytics
c. Technopreneurship
• Proposal Defense
• Research Presentations at the Faculty
• Publish two (2) research papers in conference/journal relevant to the field
• Thesis examination
• Viva-Voce or oral examination
• Submit final thesis for purpose of graduation

The Faculty and Centre of Graduate Studies will evaluate students’ achievement on a regular basis. Registered students are to produce theses that will be evaluated by the examiners and must defend their research findings in oral presentations/ examinations. A student who has satisfied the University Graduate Committee in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the PhD in Economics.
