Canva for Community @ SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor

Kuching, 29th January 2024 – The Faculty of Computing and Software Engineering kicked off its first SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society) project of 2024. This initiative involved students from the Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) program, specifically those enrolled in the BSE 1023 Information Technology Fundamentals course. The students learned the importance of ICT skills and planned how to share these skills with the community. Their efforts culminated in a practical implementation with Form 1 students at SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor (SMK DPHA Gapor).

The project was led by Florence Ms. Francis Lothai, the lecturer for the BSE 1023 course, with support from Mdm. Norahima Annuar, the Community and Industry Engagement Coordinator. They collaborated with Cikgu Bong Sze Sze, Guru Bestari of SMK DPHA Gapor, to organize an in-house workshop on Canva at the school. Following the workshop, a contest was launched to encourage ongoing exploration and learning among the students, running until March.

Canva, a free online graphic design tool, was the focus of the workshop. It can be used to create social media posts, presentations, posters, videos, logos, and more. The workshop saw participation from 24 students and 6 school teachers. The main facilitator was Adira Anak Stward Effindy, a first-year Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) student, who was assisted by other student volunteers.

The Faculty of Computing and Software Engineering extends its gratitude to Tuan Pengetua William Tedong for his consent and warm support.
