For Mr. Gerald Kho Haw Ping, an alumnus of Sarawak Skills Kuching, the combination of multidisciplinary technical skills (Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, and Occupational Safety and Health) has been invaluable in his quest to develop and implement safety and health programmes at his place of work. Yes, on-the-job safety and wellness for all staff members is a matter close to his heart!

Currently, Gerald is a Safety and Health Officer at CMS Cement Industries Sdn Bhd in Kuching. The company manufactures clinker, the main ingredient in the manufacture of cement. CMS Cement Industries Sdn Bhd is part of the CMS Group which is involved in cement manufacturing, construction materials, trading, construction, road maintenance, property development, smelting, telco infrastructure, education and other services.

Sharing on his duties and responsibilities, he highlighted, “In our line of work, there is a saying, “Constant vigilance is imperative”. Our team members go to great lengths to ensure that staff members work in a safe and healthy work environment. In this respect, we develop and implement a wide range of health and safety programmes throughout the year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I also assisted to formulate and implement various Action Plans.”

With regard to his studies at Sarawak Skills Kuching, he shared, “I would like to thank my instructors, trainers and staff members for their support! In addition to developing important technical skills, I was able to hone my communication and leadership skills. My thanks also to Sarawak Skills for helping me to secure financial assistance from the Skills Development Fund Corporation (PTPK). This enabled me to complete the Mechatronics and Industrial Automation programme (Level(s) 2, 3 & 4). On completion of the aforementioned programme(s), with financial support from the Human Resources Development Fund, I was also able to pursue the Certificate in Safety and Health Officer (CiSHO) programme at Sarawak Skills.”
