During our recent interview with Mr. David Lawrence de Zeeuw, two things came to mind; he has a deep reservoir of industry-relevant knowledge and skills, and he prefers to tackle challenges head-on. Indeed, his ‘Take the Bull by the Horns’ approach has enabled him to hone essential problem-solving and leadership skills.
Upon completing his studies at the Automotive and Welding Institute of Sarawak (AWISAR), he gained invaluable work experience in Miri (Rigger), Johor Bahru (Welder/Non-Destructive Testing Inspector) and Brunei Darussalam (Welding Instructor). Thereafter, in March 2017, he joined Velosi (M) Sdn. Bhd., Miri as a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technician. Due to his commendable work performance, he was promoted to the position of Engineering Inspector in March 2018. Currently, he is based in Labuan.
Commenting on his current duties and responsibilities as an Engineering Inspector, he highlighted, “I oversee the topside periodic inspections of in-service equipment such as storage tanks, pressure vessels and piping. An important aspect of each inspection is to assess the mechanical integrity of process equipment, and verify conformance to clients’ needs and code specifications.
With regard to his studies at AWISAR, he shared, “I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue the welding programme at AWISAR. Indeed, this was an all-important step for me to realize my ambition to work in the oil and gas industry. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Sarawak Foundation (Yayasan Sarawak) for the financial assistance during my studies.”
His message to current students of Sarawak Skills/AWISAR: Don’t give up! Keep trying! Listen to your mentors and seniors. Be vigilant, be stern, but at the same time, be humble. Always remember, Safety First.”
